侘寂 - Wabi-sabi
The Beauty of the Imperfect
Your piece will not match the photograph, the one before it or the one after it. In wabi-sabi, this is not a flaw to be corrected - it's the proof that a person, not a machine, made the thing you own.
Two more ideas travel with it, and Cozo taught us both: mottainai, to waste nothing and omoiyari, to make with care for whoever receives it.

The Last of a Four-Hundred-Year Line
Cozo Cazama is one of the few remaining aizome masters in Japan, heir to an unbroken lineage four centuries deep. He has given decades of his life to a dye most of the world replaced with petroleum.
He is not a name we licensed. He is the reason AIZOME exists. When our founders came to Japan, he took them under his wing and taught them what synthetic indigo had cost us - and what the plant could give back. Everything we make traces to that vat.
"To master the art of aizome, one is required to observe and learn from nature, and also to respect nature's ways… Feeling the identity of being a part of the natural world, this is what aizome is to me."
Of everything he makes for us, one piece asks the most of him.
A Dye That Is Alive
Every artisan piece is dyed with sukumo: indigo leaves grown, harvested, and slowly composted for nearly a year before the first thread touches them. The result is not a chemical bath but a living vat - fermenting, breathing, tended every day.
-
Seed
Indigo is sown in spring soil.
-
Leaf
Months later, the leaves are harvested by hand.
-
Ferment
The leaves compost slowly into sukumo - the living dye.
-
Vat
The vat is built and tended daily, like something alive.
-
Aizome
Each piece is dyed by hand, deepening with every dip.
