The surface of a living indigo vat, deep blue and still.

The Artisan Line

A Masterclass in Slow Craft

Hand-dyed in Japan by Cozo Cazama, one of the few remaining masters of aizome - the traditional Japanese art of indigo. No stock, no storage, no surplus. Each piece begins the day you ask for it.

Cozo Cazama at his indigo vats in Japan.

The Last of a Four-Hundred-Year Line

Cozo Cazama is one of the few remaining aizome masters in Japan, heir to an unbroken lineage four centuries deep. He has given decades of his life to a dye most of the world replaced with petroleum.

He is not a name we licensed. He is the reason AIZOME exists. When our founders came to Japan, he took them under his wing and taught them what synthetic indigo had cost us - and what the plant could give back. Everything we make traces to that vat.

"To master the art of aizome, one is required to observe and learn from nature, and also to respect nature's ways… Feeling the identity of being a part of the natural world, this is what aizome is to me."

- Cozo Cazama

Of everything he makes for us, one piece asks the most of him.

The Yūgen bed throw in hand-dyed indigo, draped across a bed.

Bed Throw Yūgen 幽玄

Yūgen names a grace too deep to point at - the profound beauty of the unseen, the exchange of energy that draws something lovely out of the dust of the universe. It is the piece we could not make any other way, and the one he gives the most time to.

A Dye That Is Alive

Every artisan piece is dyed with sukumo: indigo leaves grown, harvested, and slowly composted for nearly a year before the first thread touches them. The result is not a chemical bath but a living vat - fermenting, breathing, tended every day.

  1. Seed

Indigo is sown in spring soil.

  2. Leaf

Months later, the leaves are harvested by hand.

  3. Ferment

The leaves compost slowly into sukumo - the living dye.

  4. Vat

The vat is built and tended daily, like something alive.

  5. Aizome

Each piece is dyed by hand, deepening with every dip.

Cozo works by hand, one piece at a time. AIZOME ULTRA™ brings his craft to scale. Learn more about our patent-pending ultrasonic plant-dyeing process for everyday, affordable textiles.

Indigo Hana Tee

The everyday piece of the line - our unbleached regenerative organic t-shirt, dyed by the same hands and the same vat as the throw. It will fade the way natural indigo fades: slowly, and toward something better.

侘寂 - Wabi-sabi

The Beauty of the Imperfect

Your piece will not match the photograph, the one before it or the one after it. In wabi-sabi, this is not a flaw to be corrected - it's the proof that a person, not a machine, made the thing you own.

Two more ideas travel with it, and Cozo taught us both: mottainai, to waste nothing and omoiyari, to make with care for whoever receives it.

Furoshiki 風呂敷

A single square of unbleached organic cotton that Japan has used for centuries to carry, wrap, cover, and give. Fold it four ways and it becomes four things. The most generous way to give something - including itself.

Nothing Here Exists Yet

We hold no stock of these pieces. There is no warehouse shelf with your throw on it.

  1. You order.
  2. Word reaches Cozo in Japan.
  3. He dyes your piece by hand.

That takes four to six weeks, and we would rather tell you plainly than pretend otherwise. Supply is limited by what one master can make in a year - not by a number we invented.
