Before you left the house today, you probably touched a half dozen dyed fabrics. Sheets, a towel, a shirt, socks. Color is just there. Nobody reads an ingredient list for it, and almost nobody stops to ask what's actually behind it.
That's fair. Color feels harmless. But conventional textile dyeing is one of the most chemically intensive steps in making the clothes and bedding you live in every day: up to 1,500 synthetic chemicals can pass through a conventional dye bath before a single garment reaches a shelf. "100% cotton" tells you what the fiber started as. It doesn't tell you what happened to it next.
That's not any one brand cutting corners. It's just how the industry has dyed fabric for decades: synthetic dyes, synthetic fixatives, synthetic carriers, because that combination binds color fast and cheap at scale. The plant, if there's one in the mix at all, is often the smallest part of the process.
We wanted the plant to be the whole process: color locked into the fiber with nothing synthetic standing between it and your skin. That question led us to build AIZOME ULTRA™.
What AIZOME ULTRA™ Is
Here's the part that still sounds a little unbelievable, even to us. AIZOME ULTRA™ is our patent-pending dyeing process, and it doesn't use chemical fixatives at all. It uses sound.
Ultrasonic cavitation binds real plant color permanently into organic cotton, with no chemistry required to hold it there.
High-frequency sound waves create microscopic implosions that drive dye molecules into the fiber's cell walls, with no synthetic mordant required.
How It Works
High-frequency sound waves create microscopic implosions in the dye bath. Those tiny implosions physically drive the plant dye molecules inside the cotton's cell walls, where they lock in place. No synthetic mordants, no petrochemical carriers, no toxic finishing agents. Sound does the job chemistry usually has to.
- Plant color, permanently bound. Indigo, madder, and silver sumac molecules are driven into the fiber by sound waves, not glued on top with synthetic chemistry.
- Low heat. Gentler temperatures help preserve the natural properties of the plants themselves.
- A closed loop. The dye bath is continuously replenished and reused, then filtered before release, clean enough to return to farmland.
The result is textile color with nothing synthetic standing between the plant and your skin.
Why It Matters
Conventional dyeing is one of the thirstiest processes in fashion. Because AIZOME ULTRA™ reuses its dye bath in a continuous closed loop, it cuts freshwater use dramatically. Our finished textiles are PFAS tested by TÜV SÜD (not detected), with 0.00 formaldehyde detected. Because the color comes from plants and the process adds no irritants, ULTRA-dyed fabric is built for sensitive, reactive, and newborn skin. It's certified safe for direct newborn skin contact under OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Class I.
We Tested It, Instead of Assuming It
The benefits come from the plant dye, not the cotton. So rather than take that on faith, we sent it to a lab. Independent testing of our indigo and madder (Rose Rubia) textiles found bacterial reduction that holds up through 20 washes.
Ancient Craft, Modern Science
AIZOME ULTRA™ grew out of aizome, the centuries-old Japanese craft of indigo dyeing. We took that tradition and rebuilt it as a modern process: one that swaps ultrasonic sound for the synthetic fixatives conventional dyeing relies on.
That process runs in Gaomi, China, where the certified Turkish organic cotton is spun, woven, and dyed as part of our fully traceable Seed-to-Sheet™ supply chain, under a GOTS Scope Certificate. So the color you see carries two histories at once: a centuries-old dyeing tradition, and a supply chain built to document every step along the way.
