If you’ve ever accidentally gotten a bit of bleach on your skin, you know the burn, the irritation, and the overpowering smell that lingers in the air and on your fingers. According to the CDC, chlorine bleach can be toxic if inhaled or if it comes into direct contact with the skin.
So why would these chemicals be used in textiles — the thing constantly in contact with your skin?
The textile industry 'bleaches' fibers to remove 'natural impurities' and to create a 'blank canvas' for dye. To do so, they use various synthetic chemicals such as Calcium Hypochloride, Sodium Chlorite, and Sodium Formaldehyde Sulfoxylate.
These chemicals have been linked to allergic contact dermatitis, eczema, and other skin irritation. Sodium Formaldehyde Sulfoxylate, for instance, is used to strip recycled fabrics of dye to convert them into new fabrics, while being "suspected of causing genetic defects". The use of these chemicals leaves residuals in the fabrics that you interact with daily and also poses a threat to the health of textile workers and to our environment.
A Healthy, Unbleached Alternative for Clothing-wearers Everywhere!
Over the years, many of you have reached out to us with a problem: sleeping in AIZOME sheets resulted in such a noticeable difference in the comfort and happiness of your skin, that it made you start to wonder about ALL the other fabric rubbing against you throughout the day. But pulling at the threads that hold the textile industry together – the perplexing production chains and unregulated marketing claims – is overwhelming. Where can one turn for uncompromising, unbleached, allergen-free quality, with no hidden ingredients?
At AIZOME, we believe that the burden of opaque manufacturing and industry-wide greenwashing should not be placed on the consumer. In fact, it shouldn’t exist at all. Our transparency comes from working in harmony with nature. Our 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, hypoallergenic textiles – dyed with medicinal herbs – have been scientifically proven to be kind to your skin and the environment. Inspired by the ancient craft of Japanese indigo dyeing and Traditional Chinese Medicine, our clothing is free from harmful chemicals such as AZO dyes, PFAS, and formaldehyde – all of which have been found widely throughout the textile industry, and which have been linked to numerous health issues, including cancer, skin irritation, and reproductive harm.
The challenge is, you cannot wear our bedsheets in public (though we certainly wouldn’t judge you!) So where-oh-where can one turn for clothing that is as soothing and allergen-free as AIZOME bedding? Over the years, our answer has been singular and consistent: Cottonique. Cottonique shares our unwavering commitment to creating clothing that is free from allergens and synthetic materials.
